RBNZ Monetary Policy Statement Preview Next Wednesday
ANZ expects the RBNZ will raise the Official Cash Rate (OCR) 50bp to 4.75% at its Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) next Wednesday. This is based on the fact that the inflation pressures are far too strong, and markets are certainly not expecting the RBNZ to go ‘soft’.

Recent and Ongoing Weather Events Likely Inflationary On OCR
Recent weather events will clearly be negative for GDP in the short run, due to significant disruption over a large area. The events will be inflationary overall, via insurance, goods shortages, transport disruption, construction costs and fruit and vegetable prices, among other impacts. There could also be confidence effects. The early assessment is that it presents upside risk to the eventual peak in the OCR.

REINZ Housing Data–January 2023
Housing prices are just more than15% below their November 2021 peak. ANZ maintains its forecast for a peak-to-trough decline of 22%. Sales were up a seasonally adjusted 14.0% m/m in January. The smaller-than-expected fall in the HPI and the bounce in sales may point to a slightly stronger start to 2023 than market had anticipated, but it’s unwise to read much into one month’s data given the scope for volatility and revisions.

Why Inflation Matters?
An inflation rate between 1 and 3% is generally viewed as ideal, as it tends to be associated with positive economic growth, rising profits and stock price gains. But high inflation is a problem because it reduces the value of people’s savings and purchasing power
